A gambler from the mainland allegedly used at least five counterfeit HK$1,000 banknotes at a casino in Cotai, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said at a press briefing yesterday.

Chan said that earlier this week staff at the Cotai casino discovered the five bogus HK$1,000 banknotes in the dealer’s cash box and reported the case to the police. Police officers went to the casino to investigate and arrested the 31-year-old suspect who was still there. He refused to cooperate with the police and did not disclose the source of the fake banknotes.

According to Chan, the counterfeit banknotes were high quality forgeries that were very similar to their genuine counterparts, adding that the five bogus HK$1,000 banknotes had different serial numbers on them. The police yesterday were still investigating where the counterfeit notes came from.

The suspect has been transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) for further investigation and possible arraignment for attempting to put counterfeit currency into circulation.
