Last Sunday a 68-year-old woman surnamed Dong from the mainland died of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in the kitchen of a suspected illegal inn in Rua de Berlim – and after further investigation, the police confirmed that the victim’s daughter, aged 50, is an overstayer, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said at a regular press conference yesterday.

Apparently, the kitchen had been converted into a bedroom. The flat’s water heater is located in the kitchen, the door and windows of which were closed when the victim was sleeping there and someone else in the flat was taking a shower in the bathroom whose water supply is connected to the heater in the kitchen.

Leng said that the victim’s daughter had rented a room in the suspected illegal inn from a man surnamed Chen.
