A local man told a mainland man last year that he could provide jobs on a local construction site for a fee that he never returned, aside from failing to secure any of the promised jobs, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Choi Ian Fai said at a regular press conference yesterday.

Choi said that the suspect surnamed Chan, a 26-year-old local driver, and the 54-year-old mainlander met in January last year when Chan had told the victim that he was able to arrange jobs for a fee of 8,000 yuan per person.

The mainlander introduced 68 people to Chan and paid the suspect a total of 544,000 yuan along with ID documents of the people who were expecting to get a job in Macau. After a while, Chan returned 416,000 yuan to the victim and said that he had failed to get jobs for the 68 people but still charged him a fee.
