The suspected killer of a man in the guestroom of a hotel in Cotai whose body was found on February 17 has been arrested in the northern province of Shanxi, over 1,700 kilometres from Macau, the local police announced at the weekend.

The local police did not say whether the suspect will be transferred for trial in Macau, merely saying that the case will be handled in line with the laws of both Macau and the mainland.

While the suspect faces capital punishment if tried by a mainland court, Macau’s maximum prison term for homicide is 20 years, while for aggravated murder it is 25 years. The Macau Penal Code prohibits capital punishment and life imprisonment.
