Hundreds of residents took part in a protest jointly organised by the grassroots Macau Community Development Initiative (MCDI) group and the non-establishment New Macau Association on Saturday against the government’s plan to sign a reciprocal driving-licence recognition deal with the mainland, while also urging the government to strengthen its law enforcement measures on the illegal hiring of non-local drivers.

The two organisers told reporters that about 1,100 people took part in the protest, while the police told the media that about 340 people participated in the demonstration.

The protestors started the demonstration in Vasco da Gama Garden at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
