There could be four to six tropical cyclones entering within 800 kilometres of Macau this year, and there would probably be severe typhoons among them, the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said in a statement yesterday.
The statement said that as Macau is soon to enter the rainy and typhoon seasons, the bureau carried out an analysis of the current situation of oceanic and atmospheric circulation, which indicates an El Niño developing in the western Pacific Ocean that is forecast to be there until the summer.
El Niño (“Christ Child” in Spanish) is a weather phenomenon caused when warm water from the western Pacific Ocean flows eastward.
