A mainlander cheated a male gambler out of HK$2 million by claiming he could give him non-negotiable chips worth HK$4 million, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Chan identified the suspect as a 31-year-old surnamed Zhang. The 48-year-old victim, whose surnamed was not released, is also from the mainland. He told the police that he works for a VIP room of a local casino.

According to Chan, the victim was introduced to Zhang by a friend on March 22. Later that day they went to a VIP room in a casino during which Zhang persuaded the victim to open an account with the VIP room and deposit HK$2 million in cash in exchange for non-negotiable gaming chips worth HK$4 million, according to Chan.
