Zhang Yuge, a council member of the Chinese Association of Hong Kong & Macau Studies, said yesterday that Macau could achieve economic diversification not just by exploring local industrial transformation but also by joining the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA), adding that Macau should achieve “dual transformation” by transforming itself from being a single city to being part of a metropolis, and also by transforming itself from an economy dominated by the gaming industry into one characterised by moderate economic diversification, with the aim of solving the issue of its own limited room for development.

Zhang made the remarks while delivering a keynote speech at a half-day GBA forum organised by Guangdong Namyue Group on the campus of the private Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Taipa. Around 400 people attended the forum.

Zhang is the director of the Department of Hong Kong, Macau and Regional Development at the Shenzhen-based China Development Institute (CDI), a top think tank.
