The Macau Customs Service said in a statement yesterday that its officers have busted three illegal immigration cases.

In the first case, the Guangdong coast guard saw a suspicious speedboat moving towards Cheoc Van Beach on the southern shore of Coloane in the early hours of last Friday and informed the Macau Customs Service of the situation. A Macau Customs Service vessel was deployed to intercept the suspicious speedboat and five illegal immigrants on board were caught. Customs officers continued their search in the area and caught three more people on the shore who were helping the five illegal immigrants enter Macau, according to the statement, which did not mention the eight people’s gender.

In Cantonese jargon, people smugglers are known as “snakeheads”. Yesterday’s statement did not use the term “snakeheads” to refer to the three people allegedly abetting illegal immigration.
