A female student from the mainland studying at a local university lost 250,000 yuan (292,100 patacas) in a phone scam last Thursday, according to a Judiciary Police (PJ) statement on Saturday.
The student received a phone call from an unknown number on Thursday morning. The caller was a woman speaking Putonghua, who claimed that she was an SF Express employee and that the student had sent a package that contained a prohibited item, according to the PJ statement.
After the student denied the claim, the caller said that her personal details might have been stolen, and purportedly transferred the call to a Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau officer. The “officer” claimed to be surnamed Xu. The student revealed her identification details to Xu, who gave her a mobile phone number, telling her to use WhatsApp for future communication, according to the PJ statement.
