The government expects that each taxi owner will need to pay 10 patacas per day for the future operation and maintenance of the officially-required “smart terminal” system – consisting of various devices such as a meter, a Global Positioning System (GPS), an audio recorder and a video recorder – to be installed in every taxi, which is required by the new law regulating the city’s taxi sector which will come into force early next week, Transport Bureau (DSAT) Director Kelvin Lam Hin San said yesterday.

The installation of the system in all taxis will be paid for by the government, according to Lam.

Lam made the remarks during a press conference at Government Headquarters when the Executive Council announced that the government has drafted three supplementary administrative regulations (by-laws) for the full implementation of the new taxi law which will come into force next Monday.
