Two giant brightly coloured inflated ‘heads’ near the city centre are turning heads, with some passers-by expressing bewilderment and others excitement about the ‘heads’, which aim to spread joy around the city.

The ‘heads’ are part of an outdoor installation titled “Happy Heads” created by a Brussels-based French and Chinese duo Benoît + Bo, who set their artwork up on Wednesday in Praça de Jorge Alvares in Nam Van. Their installation is one of the many projects that are part of the government’s six-month “Art Macao”, a festival of all things art in Macau. The duo’s project, which also includes an indoor exhibition, is organised by the Consulate General of Belgium in Hong Kong.

“We would like to spread joy through these happy heads,” Bo told MPD Weekender after they installed their work on Wednesday. “Many cultures design their own masks, however only the Chinese masks and the European masks carry a smile. We wish to put the same smile on Macau citizen’s faces.”
