The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) hoisted the No. 1 tropical cyclone alert at 10 p.m. yesterday, the first typhoon warning signal of the year.

The bureau pointed out that the hoisting of the No. 1 signal was merely a precautionary measure, meaning that a tropical cyclone is centred within 800 kilometres of Macau “and may affect Macau”.

At 2 a.m., the tropical cyclone was estimated to be about 460 kilometres south of Macau, according to the bureau. It was forecast to move towards Hainan. The bureau said that the possibility of hoisting of a higher warning signal before 6 a.m. was “low.”
