An 80-year-old man was cheated by a trio impersonating a local policewoman and two Shanghai policemen in a phone scam, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said during a regular conference yesterday.
According to Ho, the victim told the police that he is a local retiree. No information on the three suspects was released.
The crime happened in the afternoon of June 28. According to Ho, the victim received a call on his mobile phone from a number unknown to him. The caller was a woman speaking Putonghua, who claimed that she was a local policewoman. She told the victim that he was involved in a case in Shanghai. The phone call was then transferred to a man. He was speaking also Putonghua with the victim who claimed that he was a Shanghai policeman, telling the victim that he was involved in a money laundering case. He asked the victim to download a QQ online instant communication application for further contacts.
