The Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Centre (CPTTM) is holding its 19th Macau Fashion Technology Youth Competition aiming to train future fashion designers, Ng Ian Io, the senior manager of the Creative Fashion and Image Department of the centre, said during the contest’s opening ceremony in Rua dos Pescadores yesterday.

The 4-day competition comprises 15 contestants, most of them secondary school pupils. A contestant, Sio Weng Ian, said there was enough training in the city for youths to study making clothes and fashion design. However, Sio was quick to add that the industry was still not widely accepted and acknowledged. She pointed out that in recent years Macau has had many competitions and courses for people interested in fashion design. Therefore, Sio said, she believed that the industry will have its market in the future.

The only male contestant, Ho Ka Wan, said the most challenging part about fashion design was that when designing fashion one can add a lot of intricate details but when finally making the clothes it may not be possible to create those details.
