UM instructor focuses on ‘dark history’ of relations between humans & animals

Che Hio Ieong, a senior instructor in the Department of Communication at the University of Macau (UM), has recently published a book titled ‘Discipline and Desire – The Dark History of the Relationship between Human Beings and Animals’, according to a UM statement last week.

In the Chinese-language book, Che discusses various aspects of the relationship between human and animals from a historical perspective, the statement says.

According to the statement, the book covers various topics such as hunting and domestication, animals and totems, animals and food, zoos, pet culture, animal ethics, and animal protection laws. The statement points out that the author used different research methods such as different theoretical perspectives, archival studies, content analysis, and one-on-one interviews.
