A total of 5,698 people participated in an online vote on universal suffrage to elect the chief executive, and 93.9 percent of them agreed to elect the chief executive by popular vote, the non-establishment New Macau Association (NMA) said in a statement yesterday about the survey’s outcome.

The association said in the statement that its online ballot entitled “Vote on Universal Suffrage for Chief Executive Election” ran from August 15-24, adding that 5,351 (93.9 percent) of the participants agreed to elect the Macau chief executive by universal suffrage, while 236 (4.1 percent) disagreed, and 111 (2 percent) abstained.

The statement pointed out that the association launched its online vote with the aim of providing a platform for the public to express their views on universal suffrage for electing the chief executive, adding that the total number of voters was in line with its expectations.

Participants in the online vote simply needed to submit their mobile phone number. About 0.8 percent of Macau’s population, which according to official statistics stood at 672,000 in June, participated in the online vote.
