The Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested a female non-resident worker on Wednesday for embezzling some 180,000 patacas from her employer – a local chain of supermarkets – on every working day since early April, by deleting customer purchase records from the company’s cash registers, and then stealing the related cash from the tills shortly before finishing her work, Judiciary Police (PJ) Ho Chan Nam said during a special press conference yesterday.

According to Ho, the suspect, who worked as a cashier in the supermarket chain, carried out the embezzlement by deleting 30 to 40 customer purchase records on average every working day, accumulating over 4,900 transactions amounting to about 180,000 patacas since April when she started the scheme.

The suspect told the police that she had gambling and credit card debts totalling around 400,000 patacas so she decided to embezzle money from her employer, according to Ho. The suspect embezzled money from four of the company’s supermarkets.
