Gongbei Customs said in a statement on Friday that officers of Hengqin Customs – which is under the administration of the Gongbei Customs – separately busted three cars with dual Macau-mainland registration plates in the early hours of last Tuesday for attempting to smuggle a total of US$1.725 million (13.9 million patacas) in cash from the mainland to Macau via the Hengqin border checkpoint.

In the early hours of August 27, customs officers at the Hengqin checkpoint seized US$600,000 each in two cars and US$525,000 in another vehicle, according to the statement.

In each of the three cases, the cash was found in the vehicles’ glove compartments, according to the statement, which said that the three drivers were under investigation.
