A 62-year-old local man who was arrested in December last year for causing damage to the heritage-listed Ilha Verde Hill apologised yesterday, saying that he had damaged the hill by setting up gym equipment there as his legal knowledge was “weak” at that time.

The man, Chong Heng Pui, proffered his apologies accompanied by Macau General Union of Neighbourhood Associations Vice President Chan Ka Leong, and Ilha Verde District Welfare and Mutual Help Association Vice President Chan Fong, in a recreational area at the bottom of the hill. Chan’s association is an affiliate of the Macau General Union of Neighbourhood Associations (commonly known as Kai Fong).

The Judiciary Police (PJ) announced during a press conference on January 2 that a local man – Chong – was arrested on December 30 for damaging green areas on Ilha Verde Hill, after the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) reported the suspected criminal damage on the hill to the police on December 30. According to the police, Chong lives in a social housing estate in the neighbourhood.
