The Customs Service (SA) and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement yesterday that over 1,600 kg of smuggled and uninspected meat, vegetables and seafood were found in restaurants, vegetable stalls and different border checkpoints within their three-day joint action earlier this month.

The statement said that SA officers and IAM officials inspected various districts before the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival, confiscating 324 kg of vegetables, 9 kg of meat and 14 kg of other food items in 10 restaurants and two vegetable stalls.

The statement pointed out that the bureau has fined the owners of the businesses involved. According to the Food Safety Law, offenders face up to five years behind bars or a fine of up to 600,000 patacas.
