Transport Bureau (DSAT) Director Kelvin Lam Hin San said yesterday that his bureau expects to launch a preparatory project next month to relocate underground pipes in the area near the Oriental Pearl roundabout, which aims to facilitate the launch of a flyover project connecting the peninsula’s Areia Preta district and the land reclamation area known as Zone A – which lies off the north-eastern coast of the peninsula.

Lam made the remarks while speaking to reporters at Macau Tower on the sidelines of a plenary meeting of the government-appointed Economic Development Council.

Currently, Zone A is connected to the peninsula through one link only, at the busy Oriental Pearl roundabout (Rotunda da Amizade) on the peninsula’s north-eastern coast. Vehicles travelling to and from the man-made island where the Macau and Zhuhai border checkpoints of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB) are located – which is east of the still-not-developed Zone A – have to use this only link.
