Despite the name and taking place this month, the festival that is literally called “Broken Ghost House” has nothing to do with Halloween.

“Broken Ghost House” is the word-for-word translation of the festival’s Cantonese title named after a building called “laahn gwai lau”, which is synonymous with the quiet old quarters just a few steps away from the crowded Ruins of St. Paul’s landmark.

“Laahn gwai lau” is the Cantonese name of a street in that area. The street is officially called Travessa do Armazém Velho in Portuguese, and so the event is officially titled in English “Travessa do Armazém Velho Festival”.

Macau Historical Districts Developments Promotion Association Director Chiang Ka Hang (left) and Lei Cheok Kuan, chairman of the Industry and Commerce Federation of Macau Central and Southern District pose at a press conference about the festival earlier this week.
