The police arrested a tourist from the mainland on Friday at the local airport for carrying an expandable steel baton, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Choi Iok Kin said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Choi said the 33-year-old suspect surnamed Tong told the police that he works as a manager in a local hotel. Tong was about to take a flight with a female friend, Choi added. Her personal information was not revealed by the spokesman.

According to Choi, the incident was reported by the airport’s security guards at about 9 a.m. on Friday. Tong and his friend were about to depart from the local airport to Phuket that day. When he was going through the airport’s security check, security guards spotted a suspicious item in his black backpack. The airport security called the police for help.

This undated handout photo provided by the Public Security Police (PSP) yesterday shows a expandable steel baton (left) and a black baton pouch seized from the suspect at the local airport on Friday.
