Local residents have made up 18 percent of the travellers using the Macau checkpoint of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB) since the opening of the mega-bridge on October 24 last year, the Public Security Police (PSP) said in a statement yesterday.
The statement said that over 13 million travellers have passed through the Macau checkpoint since the delta bridge opened a year ago, adding that Hong Kong residents accounted for 36 percent of them, while mainlanders accounted for 38 percent. The statement did not mention the composition of the remaining eight percent of the travellers.
The statement said that the number of travellers using the Macau checkpoint “has repeatedly broken the [daily] record” since the operation of the bridge, adding that its number of entries and exits hit a record high of 78,000 on February 7 – the third day of the Chinese New Year.
