A 41-year-old male visitor from the mainland surreptitiously took upskirt photos and videos of a number of women around St. Paul’s Ruins in the several hours after he came to Macau on Saturday morning, a PSP spokesperson said during a regular press conference yesterday.

After his arrest, the suspect surnamed Zhong told the police that he is unemployed, the spokesperson said.

At around 4 p.m. on Saturday, PSP officers on patrol at the popular tourist attraction saw a man – Zhong – was constantly walking close to female passers-by in the area around the UNESCO World Heritage-listed landmark, and suspected that he was attempting to take upskirt photos of women, according to the spokesperson.

The officers intercepted the man and found on his mobile phone 28 photos and 17 video clips showing women’s crotch areas, bottoms and thighs, the spokesperson said, adding that all the photos and video clips were taken on that day.

Under questioning, Zhong admitted to taking the upskirts of women. Zhong told the police that he has a habit of upskirting.

According to the spokesperson, Zhong told the police that he came to Macau via the Barrier Gate border checkpoint at 9 a.m. on that day, after which he went to the area around St. Paul’s Ruins where he was looking for potential targets. Zhong said that while walking around the area he became sexually aroused whenever he saw a female passer-by in sexy clothing, and then immediately began to walk near the “target” to take upskirts. The suspect did not tell the police how many women were victims of his upskirting during his short stay here.

Zhong has been transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) for further questioning.

According to Article 186 of the Macau Penal Code, invasion of privacy is punishable by imprisonment of up to two years of a fine.
