The police nabbed a tourist from the Philippines at the local airport on Monday for possession of an axe, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Ho Ka Kit said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Ho identified the 46-year-old suspect as a male tourist surnamed Liquran. He told the police that he is unemployed, the spokesman said.
According to Ho, Liquran was scheduled to depart from the airport at midnight on Monday. When he was going through the airport ’s security check, security guards spotted a suspicious item
in his luggage, which the guards suspected to be an axe. The airport security called the police for help.
PSP officers on duty at the air- port arrived at the scene and took Liquran to a police station for questioning. Ho said.
Liquran told the police that the axe was given to him by a friend in Macau and it was to be used for chopping firewood in the Philip- pines, Ho added.
Liquran has been transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) for further investigation. He faces possible arraignment on possession of an illegal weapon charge, Ho said.
