Kudos to ‘One Country, Two Systems’ with Macau characteristics

Macau will embrace the 20th anniversary of return to the motherland tomorrow. This is a triumphant moment for the extraordinarily vibrant region to celebrate after years of endeavor to successfully implement the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.

On December 20, 1999, the Chinese government resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Macau and announced the official establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

Prior to its return to the motherland, Macau was mired in sluggish development, social instability and uncertainty. With the staunch support of the central government and the mainland, Macau has achieved a stellar performance in the past 20 years as a vigorous economy with stable and harmonious social relations, steadily developing a democratic political system, expanding international exchanges, and improving people’s livelihoods.
