The local authorities predict that smoke from a fire and explosion which occurred at a petrochemical factory in Gaolan Port in the neighbouring city of Zhuhai yesterday afternoon would not affect Macau.

A statement jointly released by the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) and the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) yesterday evening said that the weather in Macau is forecast to be constantly influenced by an easterly wind over the next two days. As Gaolan Port is located about 40 kilometres south-west of Macau, the smoke was not expected to directly affect Macau, the statement said.

The statement said that the two bureaus will continue to pay close attention to the change in Macau’s air quality.

This map jointly released by the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) and the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) yesterday shows the locations of Macau and Gaolan where yesterday’s petrochemical factory blaze occurred. The green arrow indicates the forecast easterly wind.
