The Public Security Police (PSP) nabbed a car mechanic yesterday morning after confirming that he was the person who was behind the wheel of a car that was seen on video on social media driving dangerously around the streets of Ilha Verde.
PSP spokesman Ho Ka Kit made the announcement during a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Ho, police saw a video clip showing someone driving dangerously by drifting in Ilha Verde district on social media on Saturday.
According to Wikipedia, “drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally over steers, with loss of traction, while maintaining control and driving the car through the entirety of a corner. The technique causes the rear slip angle to exceed the front slip angle to such an extent that often the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g. the car is turning left, the wheels are pointed right or vice versa; also known as opposite lock or counter-steering). The sport of drifting is not to be confused with the four wheel drift, a classic cornering technique established in Grand Prix and sports car racing. Drifting is traditionally done by clutch kicking, then intentionally over steering and counter steering.”
The police contacted the car owner, surnamed Lai, who claimed that he left his car in his younger brother’s car dealer shop on February 7, and had no idea of what had happened.
The police questioned Lai’s 45-year-old brother, who admitted that he drove the car last May around the Estrada Marginal da Ilha Verde roundabout and Estrada do Canal dos Patos, and drifted to have fun, according to Ho.
Lai was transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) yesterday and faces charges of dangerous driving.
