Hong Kong's Macanese community leader Arnaldo Oliveira Sales passed away yesterday, aged 100, public broadcaster TDM-Radio Macau reported.
According to Wikipedia, Oliveira Sales, born in the French concession in Guangzhou on January 13, 1920, came to Hong Kong at the age of eight. He lived in Macau during World War II. He held Portuguese nationality.
He was for decades a member of Hong Kong's Urban Council and its chairman from 1973-81. He was also a former president of Hong Kong's Sports Federation and Olympic Committee, as well as a member of the Hong Kong Basic Law Consultative Committee.
Oliveira Sales received numerous honours for his public service including Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), Grand Cross of the Portuguese Order of Prince Henry and the Grand Bauhinia Medal.
He headed the Macanese Clube Lusitano in Hong Kong for more than three decades, TDM-Radio Macau pointed out.
The term "Macanese" is customarily used for the community of mixed Portuguese and Asian descent in Macau and Hong Kong, as well its sizeable diaspora.
