One of the two mainland men who robbed a mainland woman of 160,000 patacas in a hotel guestroom in Nape in November last year was arrested when he reentered the city on Monday evening, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said in a special press conference yesterday.
According to Lei, the suspect is a 30-year-old man surnamed Tang from Hunan province who claims to be a businessman, while the woman is engaged in renting out hotel guestrooms after “buying” them from intermediaries.
Lei said that the incident happened on November 20 last year, when the victim learnt from her husband that someone was “selling” hotel guestrooms, and so she went to meet the intermediary at a restaurant in a hotel in Nape, after which the intermediary took her to a guestroom to discuss the deal.
As soon as the victim walked into the room, the man who accompanied her suddenly lifted her up and another man slapped her, pushed her to the floor and threatened to kill her if she screamed.
The suspects then took a belt from a bathrobe and tied the victim up, and then took her handbag and left the scene.
Afterwards, the victim untied herself and asked hotel security staff to call the police. The victim told the police she had lost HK$120,000, 22,000 yuan and a smartphone, totalling a loss of 160,000 patacas, according to Lei.
The police discovered that the two suspects had left the city, one through the Barrier Gate checkpoint and the other through the Cotai Lotus checkpoint, after the incident. At 6 p.m. on Monday, Tang was arrested when he reentered the city through the Barrier Gate checkpoint.
Tang admitted to the police that he had been to the guestroom on the day of the incident, but declined to say anything else.
Tang was transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) yesterday for further questioning, facing a robbery charge while the other suspect was still on the run.
