Macau's Tourism Crisis Management Office has issued a Level 2 travel alert for all foreign countries and territories, considering the current situation of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the world.

"The government of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) strongly urges Macau residents to avoid non-essential travel during this period," a statement by the office said today.

The statement said "Macau residents who are currently overseas should pay more attention to local government announcements." The statement also urged residents to keep themselves updated on the COVID-19 epidemic prevention guidelines issued by the Macau Health Bureau (SSM).

The Macau government has a three-level travel alert system: Level 1 urges travellers to "exercise caution", Level 2 to "reconsider non-essential travel", and Level 3 to "avoid travel". There is currently no Travel 3 alert in place.

Based on the One China policy, today's travel alert means that it does not cover the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

According to the worldometers.info website, COVID-19 is affecting 177 countries and teritories. The United Nations has 193 member states and two observer states.
