Macau's number of visitor arrivals plunged 95.6 percent year-on-year to 156,394 last month, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced today.

According to a DSEC statement, same-day visitors (81,090) and overnight visitors (75,304) fell 96.0 percent and 95 percent respectively.

Visitors' average length of stay rose by 1.8 days to 2.8 days due to the longer stay of mainlanders who took up 46.2 percent of all visitor arrivals, the statement pointed out.

Another factor, according the statement, was the increase in the proportion of overnight visitors (54.9 percent) among mainland visitors. The average duration of overnight visitors increased from 2.1 days in February last year to 5.4 days.

Visitor arrivals from most countries and territories recorded year-on-year decreases of over 90 percent in February, according to the statement.

Mainland visitors plummeted 97.2 percent to 72,307. Hong Kong (62,489) and Taiwan (5,967) visitors dropped 90.5 percent and 92.8 percent respectively. Visitors from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan accounted for 90 percent of the total number of visitor arrivals last month.

In the first two months, visitor arrivals dropped 56.9 percent year-on-year to 3 million.
