The Macau government opened today the city's fourth "quarantine hotel", the 208-room Grand Coloane Resort near Hac Sa Beach in Coloane.
According to a statement by the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO), "in the process of choosing designated hotels for medical observation, the government needs to take a diverse range of factors into careful considertion, as well as gain the consent of the designated hotels.
"However, considering that it is a safe option for residents, upon their return to Macau, to undergo medical observation at designated hotels rather than self-quarantine at home, the government will continue to look for more hotels that can be converted into venues for medical observation."
The statement pointed out that the Health Bureau (SSM) is involved in the decision-making process.
"The designated hotels provide great support and active coordination with the government for the implementation of the medical observation measure."
On Thursday, the government opened the 326-room Regency Art Hotel in Taipa as the third quarantine hotel. On Tuesday, the government announced the opening of the 300-room Golden Crown China Hotel opposite the Macau International Airport in Taipa as the city's second COVID-19 quarantine hotel.
In late January, the 298-room Pousada Marina Infante in Cotai became Macau's first hotel designated for people under medical observation in response to the novel coronavirus epidemic.
An official said during the Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre's daily press conference about the COVID-19 situation this afternoon that some 800 people are currently under medical observation at the city's quarantine hotels.
Government officials have said they expect hundreds of Macau residents to return home over the next few days, namely those studying in Europe and North America.
