The Macau government announced today the city's 19th confirmed COVID-19 case, a 19-year-old local male studying in the US.
According to a statement by the Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre, the youngster is the son of Macau's 18th confirmed COVID-19 case.
He arrived in Macau with his mother and two brothers from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport on Cathay Pacific flight CX845 at Hong Kong International Airport on Saturday where he and his family members immediately boarded a Macau-bound special bus arranged by the Macau Tourism Crisis Management Office via the Hong Kong-Zuhai-Macau Bridge (HMZB).
The youth visited Mexico from March 8-14. According to the statement he had been in the US since March 18. The statement did not say where he was between March 15 and 17.
After his mother had been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus disease upon arrival in Macau on Saturday, he later also tested positive for COVID-19. He is undergoing treatment at the isolation ward of the public Conde de Sao Januario Hospital. The statement described his condition as "normal". His two brothers have tested negative for the novel coronavirus, awaiting at the public hospital the outcome of their second tests within 48 hours.
The statement urged anyone who was on the same Cathay Pacific flight from New York to phone 28700800 for follow-up action by the Health Bureau.
Macau has recorded nine novel coronavirus cases since last Sunday. The first 10 patients - seven Wuhan tourists and three locals - have meanwhile been discharged from hospital.
SUSPECTED CASE
Meanwhile, the centre announced in a separate statement a suspected COVID-19 case, a 20-year old local resident holding Portuguese nationality who arrived in Macau from the UK on March 17, after which he was taken to a designated hotel for 14-days of medical observation. He preliminarily tested positive for the novel coronavirus today. The statement described his condition as "normal". He was moved from the hotel to the public hospital for a follow-up test.
