A local man reported to the Judiciary Police (PJ) on Saturday that he was a victim of a credit-for-sex scam as he had been threatened by a person who claimed to be a woman and identified herself to him as “Ah-Kam” to buy her a gift card, PJ spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said during a regular press conference on Tuesday.

According to Lei, the man is about 30 years old and told the police that he’s unemployed.

Lei said the victim met “Ah-Kam” through an online dating app last Wednesday and befriended her on a messaging app. “She” told him on Friday through the app that she was offering sex services for 800 patacas. They struck a deal and arranged to meet at a place near Estrada do Repouso the next day.

According to Lei, the victim arrived at the place at around 1 p.m. on Saturday but “Ah-Kam” didn’t show up. “She” later asked him through the messaging app to purchase a gift card worth about 600 patacas in a nearby convenient store for her sex service. The victim suspected that he had been scammed and refused “her” demand, after which “Ah-Kam” threatened in at least two messages to kill him. The victim finally called the police who launched an investigation.

Lei said in a follow-up message to the media that the man had fallen victim to a similar scam in July 2016, then losing 12,650 patacas.
