The public University of Macau (UM) has established a new entity called Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS) which aims to create a university-level, cross-faculty research platform, as well as to further support the development of Macau society, according to a UM statement yesterday.
According to the statement, while continuing to develop disciplines which will provide a competitive edge in science, the university will also give priority to some emerging disciplines, including interdisciplinary subjects that cover humanities, social sciences, science and technology, in order to meet the current trends in society.
Currently, UM has three platforms for research in humanities and social sciences (HSS), namely the Centre for Macau Studies (CMS), the Asia-Pacific Academy of Economics and Management (APAEM), and the newly established IAS, the statement said.
“IAS” is also the official abbreviation of the government’s Social Welfare Bureau.
The institute is an academic unit at UM coordinating the resources in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH), Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS), Faculty of Business Administration (FBA), Faculty of Education (FED), and Faculty of Law (FLL), the statement notes.
According to the statement, the institute recently launched a fellowship scheme in order to encourage top scholars in humanities and social sciences at home and abroad to conduct cutting-edge research at UM, and promote research and exchanges in humanities and social sciences in Macau.
