Central People’s Government Liaison Office Deputy Director Yan Zhichan yesterday said that steadily promoting the “One Country, Two Systems” principle with Macau characteristics in Macau would set an example for Taiwan compatriots.
Yan made the remarks during a speech at a seminar for the 15th anniversary of the implementation of the Anti-Secession Law at The Plaza Restaurant in Zape.
The seminar was organised by the Macau Region China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification.
Yan referred to what President Xi Jinping said previously: the “One Country, Two Systems” principle is the best way for the nation’s peaceful unification.
Macau is the window for Taiwan compatriots to get to know the “One Country, Two Systems” principle in action, Yan said.
For Macau to well develop the “One Country, Two Systems” principle is the biggest contribution it can make to the nation’s unification, Yan said.
Yan urged Macau compatriots to actively promote and show the achievements of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle, and to “tell a good story” about Macau.
Yan also called for Macau compatriots to refute with facts the Taiwan pro-independence forces’ smearing of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.
Macau compatriots could strengthen Taiwan compatriots’ understanding, recognition and support of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle and provide Macau’s wisdom to the “two systems” for the case of Taiwan, Yan said.
Secretary for Administration and Justice André Cheong Weng Chon said in his speech that in the past 15 years, the Anti-Secession Law has been able to maintain stability in cross-Strait relations, apart from protecting the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as safeguarding the Chinese nation’s fundamental interests.
Based on the current international situation and cross-Strait relations, peaceful unification is facing more challenges, Cheong said.
As one of the nation’s special administrative regions (SAR), Macau must have a “clear attitude”, strongly oppose any forms of Taiwan independence activities, and support and protect the nation’s Anti-Secession Law, Cheong stressed.
Macau is obliged to strive for peaceful development in the cross-Strait region and create “favourable conditions” for the nation’s unification, Cheong stressed.
Cheong vowed that Macau government will continually strengthen the “attractiveness and persuasiveness” of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle and help the nation achieve peaceful unification.
