Macao Orchestra to get back in action with ‘Summer Episodes’

The Macao Orchestra, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), will resume its performances this month, presenting four concerts comprising classical symphonies, chamber music and youth concerts for classical music fans, welcoming the summer with “wonderful melodies”, the bureau said in a statement yesterday.

Admission to the concerts is free. Registration will be available from tomorrow.

The Macao Orchestra will hold the concert “Classical Express – Back for Fun”, as part of its Young Audience Programme Activity, on July 18, at the Dom Pedro V Theatre, at 11a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Under the baton of the orchestra’s Assistant Conductor Francis Kan, “music aficionados of all ages will be taken on a journey to the paradise of classical music in an intriguing and interactive way, enjoying a pleasant time with families,” the statement said.

The orchestra’s Music Director Lu Jia will conduct its first large-scale symphony concert of the year, “Beethoven Symphony No. 3” on July 25, at the Grand Auditorium of the Macau Cultural Centre in Nape, at 8 p.m., presenting the German composer’s classical Symphony No. 3, demonstrating the immortal spirit of the musician.

The orchestra will present “Beethoven: An evening of chamber music” on August 7, at 8 p.m., at the Dom Pedro V Theatre, featuring two chamber pieces by Beethoven, the String Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 18, No. 6 and the Quintet for Piano and Winds in E-flat Major, Op. 16, as well as the Bassoon Quartet in G minor, Op. 73, No. 3 by French composer François Devienne, offering classical music savants “a veritable musical feast that has a captivating blend of elegance,” the statement said.

Under the baton of Kan, the concert “The Encounter of Beethoven and Haydn” will be held on August 24, at 8pm, at the Grand Auditorium of the Macau Cultural Centre, presenting Austrian composer Joseph Haydn’s last Symphony No. 104 in D major “London” and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1, telling the story of the musical legacy of two legendary figures.

Admission to the concerts is free with tickets. Registration can be made on the official WeChat account and the “Macao Orchestra” page on Facebook from 12 noon on July 10.
