Local group Theatre Farmer is holding a “Theatre Playground” workshop featuring a “theatresports” concept this weekend for people who would like to get into drama.

According to the group, to enhance participants’ creativity, communication and listening skills, team spirit and positive thinking, the workshop uses a series of theatre games to pique participants’ interest in drama.

This workshop will be held this Saturday and Sunday, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Theatresports was created by Keith Johnstone, the world-renowned dramatist, to perform performances and competitions in the form of “improvisation”, focusing on the team spirit and enthusiastic interaction of participants.

Jacky Li Chun Kit, one the founding members and the director of Theatre Farmer, has been promoting theatresports in Macau for 20 years.

“When I first knew about theatresports, I thought it was very interesting, positive, fun and full of team spirit, so after learning theatresports from Keith Johnstone, I couldn’t wait to bring it back to Macau,” Li told The Macau Post Daily on the group’s premises near Avenida de Horta e Costa yesterday.

Li said that theatresports teaches people about being positive. What people learn from theatresports is not only useful in performances or competitions, but also in daily life. “Learn by playing” is the purpose of theatresports, he pointed out.

“Everyone has a field in his heart. Use dreams to cultivate and love to irrigate,” is not just a motto for Li, but the words Li wants to tell everyone who loves theatre.

Through Li’s continuous efforts and constant promotion, theatresports has spread to the mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, and other parts of Asia.

Theatre Farmer is Macau’s first non-profit full-time professional theatrical troupe, organised in 2000 by several Macau performing artists who have a passion for performing arts. To take theatre into the community and schools, Theatre Farmer has produced a number of public performances and touring shows.

Theatre Farmer introduced theatresports to Macau in 2001. In addition to regularly holding workshops, the group also hosts performances and competitions every year. Those who have participated and enjoyed the activities may also join the group’s “Boom Theatre Garden” (BTG) team for networking events.

The “Theatre Playground” workshop hosted by Li is open for registration now. The fee is 100 patacas (half price for full-time pupils and students or BTG members). For enquiries, call 2870 5005 or visit the official website http://www.tfarmers.org.
