Winners’ creations for this year’s “4.23 World Book Day Creative Competition” in Macau are on display from this month until September in the city’s public libraries.
The World Book Day has been held annually on April 23 since 1995.
Macau, Hong Kong and Guangdong took part in the contest.
April 23 (4.23) was chosen by UNESCO because it was the birth or death date of many famous writers around the world including Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare.
The event is co-organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau’s (IC) Public Libraries Department, Hong Kong Public Libraries, Sun Yat-sen Library of Guangdong Province and Shenzhen Library, according to a statement by the bureau.
According to the statement, the competition was based on the theme of “Growing Up with Reading”. Through painting and writing, the contest combined reading and creation to encourage children and youngsters to broaden their reading categories and make good use of library resources. A total of 910 local entries were received this year, resulting in 65 prize-winning creations in the art and essay categories.
The winning works were displayed at the Central Library last week and will be showcased at the Seac Pai Van Library from Saturday to July 31, at the Taipa Library from August 3 to 16, at the Sir Robert Ho Tung Library from August 17 to September 13, and at the Patane Library from September 21 to 29.
The winning creations were exhibited at a number of local schools earlier this year. The published list of winners can be found on the public libraries website of the Cultural Affairs Bureau www.library.gov.mo. Visitors are advised to check the opening hours of the respective libraries. For enquiries, call 8590 4503 (Miss Ieong) or 8590 4505 (Miss Choi) during office hours.
As part of the government’s COVID-19 epidemic prevention measures, all visitors entering the venue must wear a facemask, have their temperature checked and present a digital health declaration.
