A local woman reported to the police recently that she had been cheated out of 200,000 yuan (228,975 patacas) in an online scam, a Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesperson said during a regular press conference on Friday.

According to the spokesperson, the 26-year-old victim told the police that she met a man through a mobile app in February, and they became online friends. The man introduced her to an online number-guessing gambling software in late March, claiming that it was easy to make money.

The victim set up an account and deposited 5,000 yuan to participate in the game. Afterwards, the man asked her to deposit more money in order to get more rebates. The victim then deposited another 4,500 yuan into the account and followed the instructions to bet. When the balance of the account reached 10,000 yuan the woman was able to withdraw the money, the spokesman said.

After she had received the 10,000 yuan, the man urged her to deposit more and more money, and she deposited a total of 200,000 yuan into the account between March 28 and April 3. The man continued to ask the victim to deposit more money but she told him finally that she had no more money.

She later discovered that she couldn’t log into the gambling programme anymore and also couldn’t contact her friend. The victim suspected that she had been deceived and reported the case to the police, according to the spokesman.
