A firefighter was dismissed by Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak for stealing from a property agency in Zape early this year, Wong’s office said in a statement yesterday.

The statement pointed out that the Fire Services Bureau (CB) completed its disciplinary procedures about the case, and Wong issued an order last Wednesday to dismiss the 27-year-old fireman who had joined the Fire Services Bureau in 2018.

The case was announced by a Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman in a special press conference on February 28,

The PJ spokesman said at that time that after drinking on February 25 the off-duty fireman happened to walk past the property agency early in the morning. After seeing that the door hadn’t been locked he decided to enter it and searched the premises, stealing nearly 30,000 patacas in cash, a diamond necklace and three bottles of red wine worth about 100,900 patacas in total.

The PJ spokesman said the owner told the police he had received a call from the fireman on February 26, who admitted to the theft and suggested the two meet up at the agency so he could return what he had stolen. PJ officers went to the agency before the meeting and arrested the fireman when he arrived in the afternoon on February 27.

Wong Sio Chak told reporters on February 26 that misconduct by members of the Public Security Forces would never be tolerated, adding that staff members violating the law pose a “big danger” to citizens and jeopardise the “sanctity” of the law.

Yesterday’s statement did not mention whether the ex-fireman surnamed Wong has meanwhile stood trial.
