A 38-year-old local woman is facing a charge of negligent homicide after a 69-year-old man died after being hit by a car on Rua do Guimarães on Friday, the Public Security Police (PSP) said on Saturday.
The Public Security Police said in a statement on Friday that a man pushing a trolley was severely injured after being hit by a car that was turning from Rua do Tarrafeiro into Rua do Guimarães in the Inner Harbour area at 11:23 a.m. that day.
According to media reports, the man’s right leg was pinned under the car’s front wheel and he also suffered a scalp laceration with a cerebrospinal fluid leak.
After removing the man from underneath the car, PSP said that he was taken to the public Conde de S. Januário Hospital Centre for emergency treatment, but he was certified dead at about 2 a.m. on Saturday.
The statement said that the driver passed a breathalyser, suspecting the cause of the accident was that the driver had failed to give way to the pedestrian.
The case has been passed to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP). The driver faces a negligent homicide charge, the statement said.
The Public Security Police have urged witnesses to the accident to call the PSP’s Traffic Department on 2837 4214.
