An exhibition entitled “Macau’s Mangroves: A Coastal Treasure” co-organised by the Institute of Science and Environment of the private University of St. Joseph (USJ), non-governmental organisation Clean the World and gaming operator Sands Macau, is being held on the Catholic university’s Ilha Verde campus to present the natural environment of mangroves.
The exhibition displays photographs of animals, videos and interactive water tank models aiming to showcase the local mangroves ecosystem that makes up an essential part of Macau’s natural environment, according to a statement by the organisers.
The exhibition is sponsored by The Drop by Drop Project, the government’s Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) and the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM).
According to the statement, the exhibition aims to raise community awareness and encourage the public to cherish Macau’s mangrove habitat. The statement points out that Macau has mangroves about four kilometres across the coastline of Cotai, which can reduce the impact of the rising sea levels and extreme weather, help alleviate climate change, improve coastal water quality and provide habitats for a variety of animals and plants.
In addition, different kinds of artwork by pupils of various local schools about the mangroves are also on display.
The exhibition is open to the public until September 30 from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Kent Wong Exhibition Gallery in 14-17, Estrada Marginal da Ilha Verde, University of Saint Joseph, Ilha Verde.
