An exhibition entitled “Chui Wing Chi Comics Exhibition” organised by the Macau Seniors Painting and Calligraphy Association and co-sponsored by the public Macau Foundation (FM) and the Grand Plaza Group Catering Management Co. Ltd. marked its opening at The Plaza Restaurant gallery on Saturday evening to celebrate the 71st anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the 21st anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland, according to a statement by the organiser.

Chui Wing Chi is a local medical scientist specialising in dermatology and venereology as well as a painter and calligrapher by passion. His ancestral home is Wangjiang county in Anhui province. Chui was born in Nanning, capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, in January 1937. He graduated from Wuzhou High School in Guangxi in 1956 and the former Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences (SUMS) in Guangzhou in 1961. After graduating, he worked as a lecturer in dermatology and moved to Hong Kong and Macau, according to the statement.

According to Wikipedia, SUMS was a national key medical university. In 2001, the university merged with Sun Yat-sen University and became the Sun Yat-sen College of Medical Science.

Chui is officially ranked as a first-class artist in the mainland. He has been a member of the China Artists Association of Guangdong since 1980. Chui’s work has been displayed at many painting events in the mainland, Macau and Lisbon, according to the statement.

In the exhibition brochure, Chui points out that his comics promote the Doctrine of the Mean (中庸), and there are many ways to solve the contradictions among people, mainly relying on criticism and self-criticism, and the best way to solve the problem is to use gentle and humorous comics.

“I use humour and funny ways to make others realise their mistakes as well as to help them save face, and happily solve conflicts. This is good demeanour. This is the reason why I like humorous comics, and I think everyone likes it”, Chui underlines.

The exhibition runs until Wednesday at the gallery on the second floor of the restaurant. It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Admission is free.
