The first conference of the International Science, Technology and Innovation Forum (ISTIF) of the Boao Forum of Asia (BFA) attracted a lot of overseas sci-tech experts because a lot of “frontier issues” in the global technology field would be discussed, Fu Ziying, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the MSAR, said in his speech yesterday.

Fu made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the ISTIF ends at the Service Platform Complex for Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries in Nam Van.

Fu pointed out that the current round of technology and production evolution is speeding up, adding that it was time to strengthen international technological exchanges and cooperation.

Fu underlined that the three-day conference’s theme is “Innovation Empowers Sustainable Development”, noting that the ISTIF is the first forum of its kind. He also said that the forum could promote innovation and cooperation between Asia and the rest of the world’s technological innovation and facilitate the goal of fulfilling the United Nation’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

‘Fast lane’

According to Fu, since Macau’s return to the motherland in 1999, the city’s technological innovation industry’s growth has “entered the fast lane”, adding that on aspects such as innovation systems, policy platforms and technology researchers, the city had made “remarkable achievements”. He also pointed out that the central government has built four key laboratories in the city, which gives Macau a unique advantage, adding that the laboratories are enhancing research on microelectronics, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), sound-activated detectors, Internet of Things (IoT) and more.

Fu said that the forum being hosted in Macau has benefitted the city to gather the newest technological innovation and resources, to be more engaged with the international technology innovation centres in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) and also to open more doors for the city to diversify its development.

Fu also said he hoped that the forum would become a platform where scientists and industrialists exchange their knowledge and innovations.

Macau’s former secretary for economy and finance Lionel Leong Vai Tac is the executive chairman of the presidium for the first ISTIF.
