A 77-year-old man surnamed Chan was found dead in his bathroom at a retirement home in Taipa, apparently after committing suicide, a Judiciary Police (PJ) statement said on Friday.

According to the statement, the case was reported to the Judiciary Police by the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre on Friday.

The statement said that the retirement home’s staff did not see the man during lunch hour, so they went looking for him. The statement added that he was found hanging from a shower curtain rod with a cloth belt. The statement also said that the staff immediately cut the man down and called the police.

The statement pointed out that when the police officials investigated the scene, no suspicious injuries were found on the gentleman’s body, but neither could they find a suicide note on him or at the scene.

The statement said that the exact cause of Chan’s death has yet to be confirmed by an official autopsy.

The Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) said in a statement on Friday that it has provided help for the affected family and residents in the retirement home. The IAS statement also urged people to care for the elderly around them and strike up a conversation with one’s friends and family to release stress. The statement also said that residents in stress can call 2852 5222 or 2826 1126 for professional counselling.
