An avant-garde romantic drama “Constellations”, based on the award-winning work by British playwright Nick Payne, will be staged at the Macau Cultural Centre (CCM) on January 29 and 30.

Beijing-based new wave group Théâtre du Rêve Expérimental will be bringing the piece, conceived by internationally acclaimed director Wang Chong, onto the stage.

Premiered in London in 2012, “Constellations” conquered the “Best Play of the Year” award. Now, a new vision of Payne’s tragic comedy merges filmic language with a theatrical frame to illustrate the vastness of the universe and the dimension of human solitude.

To better grasp themes like time and space, Wang uses in his production over a dozen cameras building up a dual stage and conveying the idea of parallel universes. The story revolves around the relationship between a cosmologist, a bee-keeper and the multiplicity of choices they make in multiple dimensions, with different outcomes.

Premiered in many stages around the world, from the West End to Broadway, where the US version starred Hollywood actor Jake Gyllenhaal.

In Macau, CCM will host a post-performance talk after each show, where the director will share with the audience insights into his theatrical concepts.

“Constellations” is performed in Putonghua with Chinese and English subtitles and will be staged twice each day on January 29 and 30.

Tickets will be available from this Sunday at CCM’s box office and Macao Ticketing Network outlets with various discounts. – ccmpr
